Can’t spot the edit, but for the record, I think I should probably be a member of both the CTSL and the CTA. It’s like while trying to demonstrate a wide range of political forces you actually just ticked a couple of boxes on the ‘what does Crippens care about’ questionnaire. Which is nice.

In isolation, Economics is the study of the relations of things as they are (the state of affairs). So yes, but thankfully nothing exists in isolation so economics, like everything else is subject to change from numerous factors, identifiable and otherwise.

Does economic reality differ from social reality? The reductionist economic reading of society, by omitting other factors, “will never reveal the truth about the world” as you said, so can economics only teach us about a self-perpetuating state of affairs?

So each country gets a certain emissions limit dependent on their population?
I think, since developing countries generally have enormous populations this could have more of an equalising effect.

In terms of incentives, I guess some could argue that the incentive to invest in, say, large scale (energy intensive) infrastructure projects in Bangladesh (which under dominant narratives is much needed) would be reduced. Equally, in somewhere like Switzerland, there would be little incentive to invest in alternative carbon efficient energy because their quota would be too small (to have a large enough excess to sell off).

Though I dont see how you escape that with any other rationing system.

A thought experiment.

How would per capita distribution of carbon resources affect the world market?

Would it have a similar ‘equalising effect’? Would ‘developing’ countries suffer or survive?
